How to get to MalPais, Costa Rica

Manifesto is hosted in MalPais, on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.

Getting to Costa Rica

There are two international airports in Costa Rica

FLY to San Jose, Costa Rica (Juan Santamaria International Airport) airport code is SJO.
or
FLY to Liberia, Costa Rica (Liberia International Airport) airport code is LIB.

Getting to MalPais from San Jose

FLYING

Take a flight from San Jose/Liberia to Tambor. It's just a 30 minute flight on Nature Air (www.natureair.com) ($65-$75)
or
Sansa (www.flysansa.com) ($65)

From Tambor taxis are available or rental companies will pick you up with your rental 4x4. It is approx. a 40 minute drive to MalPais.

SHUTTLE

To Shuttle from San Jose/Liberia: There are many agencies online, one we recommend is
Montazuma Expeditions
email: info@montezumaexpeditions.com
Tel: (506) 4408078
They will pick you up at the airport and take you right to your door in MalPais for $35/person. (including ferry ride).

DRIVING YOURSELF

From San Jose to MalPais it takes about 4-5 hours... this includes a beautiful ferry crossing on the Gulf of Nicoya.
Drive West on Panamerican Highway 1 to Punterenas (through Palmares, San Ramon, Esparza), take the ferry to Paquera, and then drive West to Tambor, and then to MalPais.

From Liberia to MalPais it takes about 5-6 hours... this includes a beautiful drive South down the Pacific coast, but beware of crossing the Bongo river at high tide - you may have to wait for the tide to retreat :).
Drive South to Tamarindo, and then South to Nicoya, Carmon, Lepanto, and into Paquera, then West to MalPais (ask for directions, there is only one good road.)

Rental Cars

EuropCar or Budget or for a complete list of US car rental companies in Costa Rica see this link. (dont go to Jaco though! just use the list of car rental contacts.)

We recommend a 4X4 as most of the roads are unpaved.
